The Wrong Priorities Problem

Most new engineers spend their time in the wrong places when recording drums. They chase mic brands before learning placement. They tweak gear before learning tuning. They worry about room treatment before understanding phase. They obsess over plugins before the recording is even solid. And the result? Drum tracks that feel small, messy, or disconnected — no matter how expensive the tools. The real secret to great drum recordings is knowing what matters first, second, and third… and ignoring everything that doesn’t meaningfully move the needle. When you understand the priorities in the right order, everything finally clicks. The kit makes sense. The room makes sense. Your mic choices make sense. My course shows you that order — the exact roadmap I use for every session — so you can focus on the things that actually create powerful, musical drum recordings.

What you'll learn

Building the Foundation: Drummer, Drum Kit, Heads & Tuning

Learn how performance, drum selection, head choice, and proper tuning create 90% of your final sound — before mics, gear, or mixing ever matter.

Capture with Clarity: Microphones, Placement & The Room

Understand how to choose the right mics, position them for punch and separation, and make any room work in your favor — even small or untreated spaces.

Record with Confidence: Gain Staging, Workflow & Consistent Results

Develop a reliable tracking workflow, set proper gain and headroom, avoid the mistakes that ruin drum recordings, and create mix-ready tracks every time.

Meet Your Drum Recording Guide: Brad Sanders

Brad Sanders is a professional drummer, audio engineer, and composer with over 30 years of experience recording drum tracks in studios, and extensive experience writing and recording music for film, television, and music libraries including Warner Chappell Production Music. His work has been featured on TLC, Apple TV+, Discovery+, Univision, and HBO Max. Brad now brings together decades of studio expertise to help you achieve professional drum recordings with confidence and consistency.

Three common assumptions people have about recording drums that are widely misunderstood

#1 “I need expensive mics to get a professional drum sound.” Correct Reality: Mic placement, tuning, and the room matter more than the microphone price tag. A $99 dynamic mic on a well-tuned drum in a reasonably treated room will outperform a $1,500 condenser in a bad room on a poorly tuned kit. The mic only captures what’s already there. You can get 80–90% of a pro sound from understanding fundamentals: phase, tuning, placement, gain staging. Fancy mics are taste and convenience — not the foundation. #2 “I should focus on EQ and compression first to fix problems.” Correct Reality: If your raw sounds aren’t right, no amount of EQ or compression can rescue them. Most beginners reach for plugins because their raw drum tracks sound dull, thin, or boomy. But EQ and compression can only adjust what’s already been captured. The real fix is BEFORE hitting record: tuning, head choice, damping, mic distance, angles, and balancing volume between shells and cymbals. If your raw tracks already vibe, mixing becomes 10% tweaks instead of 90% repairs. #3 “More mics will give me a better, more professional drum sound.” Correct Reality: More mics usually cause more phase issues, more bleed, and more problems to solve. Beginners think that adding mics = adding detail. In reality, every mic you add is another potential phase conflict that can thin out your kick, weaken your snare, or wash out your overheads. A simple, clean 3–8 mic setup with good placement often sounds fuller, punchier, and more natural than a 12–16 mic setup used wrong. Pros use more mics because they understand phase — not because it inherently sounds better.

Obsessed With Perfect Drum Sounds

I’ve spent my life chasing one thing: drum recordings that sound incredible. Not “good enough,” not “fix it later,” but drum tones that hit with clarity, power, and life — in any genre, in any room. Over the last 30 years, I’ve been inside studios of every size and style — tracking, recording, and learning alongside some of the most respected producers and engineers in the world. I’ve recorded drums for rock, pop, metal, country, singer-songwriter projects, and production music featured on major networks like TLC, Apple TV+, Discovery+, and Univision. Every mistake, every frustrating recording problem? I’ve seen it all — and I’ve figured out exactly how to fix it. This course is the result of decades of obsession, experimentation, and hands-on experience. And here’s the best part: you don’t need a massive studio, piles of expensive gear, or years of trial and error to get there. I’ve condensed everything I’ve learned into a clear, repeatable process that works for home studios, small setups, and any style of music. Think of it as sitting down in a studio with me for decades of mentorship — condensed into just a few hours. You’ll learn exactly what matters, exactly what to do, and how to get consistent, professional drum recordings from the very start. If your goal is drum tracks that inspire your mixes, sound polished, and hold up in any professional context, this course will get you there — fast, practical, and obsession-tested.

Forget the Hype — Learn What Works

I get it — there’s a lot of noise out there. I know some courses overpromise and underdeliver, and it’s easy to feel skeptical. Here’s the thing: I’m not leaning on Grammy-winning producers or big-name mentors. What I do bring is over 30 years of obsessively tracking, recording, and mixing drums in every genre, in every kind of studio — from professional commercial spaces to home setups. I’ve spent decades figuring out what really works and what doesn’t, and I’m sharing it all in a way that’s clear, repeatable, and practical. Yes, I’m giving away the “secrets.” I want you to know that the real magic in drum recording isn’t in secret sauce — it’s in understanding the fundamentals, doing it the right way, and practicing consistently. That’s what this course gives you. If you’re ready to actually change your results and start capturing drum recordings that sound professional, this course is designed for you. Ignore the hype, learn the process, and see the results for yourself. - Brad
